Unicameral And Bicameral States Meaning

Many times you have heard of the states which are unicameral while some are bicameral. Before we proceed to the explanation, we need to know that parliament of India has two houses i.e. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha is also called as lower house and Rajya Sabha is called as Upper House. In the same way some Indian states may have two houses i.e. Legislative assembly and Legislative council. Legislative Assembly is also known as Vidhan Sabha whereas legislative council is known as Vidhan Parishad.

Those states which have both Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad are known as Bicameral States.

Those states which have only Vidhan Sabha are known as unicameral states.

There are 7 bicameral states in India:

  1. Andhra Pradesh
  2. Telangana
  3. Bihar
  4. Jammu & Kashmir
  5. Karnataka
